A Kona man is facing felony charges after he was arrested for beating his dog in a car Monday in Kealakekua.

Joshua White, 23, was charged Tuesday with felony cruelty to animals, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and first-degree theft, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $45,000 pending an initial court appearance on Wednesday.

White was arrested Monday after an officer on patrol in Kona observed a man repeatedly punching his dog in a car on Palihiolo Street in the Kealakekua area. The Hawaii Island Humane Society was called and police identified the man as White.

White was also wanted for an Oct. 7 car theft from a body shop on Maiau Street in Kailua-Kona, according to police.
